Adam Bullen

Adam John Bullen was born on January 19, 1970 in Framingham MA. For the first ten years of his life he traveled around the world with his parents, while his father was in the military. When Adam was about 10 years old they decided to move back to the New England area with Adam and his two siblings Jason and Jennifer. The family eventually moved to Oxford MA, Adam graduated from Oxford High School. He then went on to college. Adam tried his hand at various types of employment before joining FEMA. He found great satisfaction helping others in disaster situations.

Our son Adam lost his fight against cancer on June 12, 2000 just five months after being diagnosed with testicular cancer that had metastasized to his abdomen and lungs.  He had turned thirty years old during that time. Adam was single and had been enjoying a career with a lot of travel, which he loved. His job as a disaster assistance employee at FEMA was to help others in their time of need after Mother Nature left a path of destruction.  He would then help to better prepare them for future storms.  Never did he realize what lay ahead for him.

In that short time after Adam was diagnosed, he, his family and close friends saw what a horrible ordeal a patient and family goes through during the treatment of this dreaded illness.  While Adam was an in-patient he would, when he had the strength, walk the halls of the cancer floor hooked up to his I-Med for exercise. He would tell us about how he noticed that one of the patients had been alone for most of the past week. He had also said he had spoken with a family member of one of the other patients, and how he learned that this person could visit only once every two weeks. This was due to the expense in traveling from the other end of the state, and how they could not afford the time off for fear of losing employment.

Adam told us that he was very lucky to have the family support he had. He was with a family member almost 24 hours a day, as one of us would always try to stay with him. His brother Jason, sister Jen and sister-in-law Heather would take turns staying with him at the hospital through the long sleepless nights. He said the biggest fear in this fight was that you felt like you were alone.  He didn’t feel that way when he saw our faces every day. This meant a lot to Adam and he knew it would mean a lot to the other patients who were fighting this dreaded illness.

In Adam’s memory we have tried to bring some comfort and added support to patients and their families by doing the little things that make a difference. The donations we received in Adam’s Memory were put towards providing transportation, clothing, videos and financial assistance during emergencies.  Since Adam’s death, with the help from the nurses that had taken care of Adam we had also formed an Adam’s Angels Team to walk in support of research to cure cancer. We have taken the words Adam’s Angels to represent all those who contribute in the help to support the patients with cancer and their families in their time of need. Adam’s Angels are you the people that donate your time, money, and or auction items in support of fundraisers, through out the year.

We, Adam’s family, created the Adam Bullen Memorial Foundation in order to have a charitable organization that will provide emotional and financial support for children and adults with cancer. Its goal is to help patients and families through the many stages of this life threatening disease.  We will always remember that it is the little things that make a difference. This organization is dedicated to helping patients and families dealing with cancer, to let them know they are not alone in this fight.

Your contributions, large or small will always be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your support.  Ken and Pat Bullen
